How to Create Inventory Systems for Steel Coils
- Oct 19, 2017 -

Steel coils typically weigh thousands of pounds and represent a serious risk of injury to their handlers. Incorrect storage of coils may result in severe injury or even death. Small businesses that sell or use steel coils should track these large, heavy items with an inventory system that provides the details and locations of the coils at all times. A solid steel coil inventory system allows the small business to track the storage, shipping and destination of all coils and respond quickly to any incidents or customer service issues that may arise from their use or sale.

1.Mark each coil in inventory with a serial number. These numbers may range from a simple numeric counting designation to an alphanumeric system that also indicates the date and location of manufacture. Use the simplest design that suits the needs of the business.

2. Create a new spreadsheet in a word-processing program. These programs allow the small-business owner or manager to enter and update details with ease. Regular reports tracking coil sales or storage levels also become available.

3. Label each column with a name indicating the serial number, current stock, location, tracking numbers if the item ships or sells and its destination.

4. Enter the serial number of each coil in the left-hand column of the spreadsheet. Steel coils should remain identified by the serial number until used or sold.

5. Fill in the remaining columns with the required information. The final two columns, representing tracking numbers or destination, will remain blank unless the item moves from its current location.

6. Update the inventory spreadsheet whenever the number of coils stored changes. Tailor these updates to match the schedule of the business. Steel coil sales offices should update daily or even hourly to track regular movement of the coils. Other businesses that require the coils for manufacture may use only a small number and update weekly or monthly.
